Well, I believe a new update is in order…so here it is.
My luck this semester isn't so great. First I didn’t get accepted by Nebraska Wesleyan or MichiganState for graduate college, nor did I get accepted at my favorite choice: Mercyhurst. But if you really want to hear about how bad my luck is read this:
I have been sending e-mails back and forth with the graduate/adult studies program with Mercyhurst for the past two months.I came at a point in time when I noticed that an interview was required for there admission process, so I set up a time when I could come up there over Spring Break.I then get an e-mail saying that the interview process is no longer required to apply. But when I looked at the application, it said it was definitely required for this year (as noted on the application), so I told them that despite that, I still wanted to come up and see the college anyway. Then later on, my dad and I got tickets and flew up there, rented a car, drove up to the drab town of Erie, Pennsylvania, and then searched around for a hotel. We finally found one, and while we were checking in, I made use of the courtesy computer in the lobby and checked my e-mail. I shouldn't have done so, because as soon as I did, I found an e-mail from Mercyhurst saying that I couldn't get in because all six, yes that's right 6, of the graduate students had been chosen already. And I was like wtf!?Am I supposed to miraculously read this e-mail while flying on the plane over here? I don't think so!So Mercyhurst loses a couple hundred Rachel points for that one.
Despite the rejection, which hurt a lot mind you, (especially after the entire ordeal of traveling up there) my dad and I still met with the professors and got a tour around the department. They had a pretty small facility, and it was located in the basement of the Fine Arts building. I found this to be a little odd and cute at the same time, as I later met the department head of the Art department and got a tour of the gallery at the school, eventhough it was closed off to the public at the time. I later found that she was a sort of "groupie" among the Forensic and Anthropology Departments. Many of the students go to her art shows and gallery openings, as well as cook outs and parties.I found that to be really cute, and it was probably due to their proximity of each other in the building, and the small size of the college in general (about 3,500 total).
Even so, the Forensic program had a lot of nice equipment and a pretty nice place despite its size and location. The program actually started a couple of years ago with an emphasis in Forensic Archaeology, because there needed to be more of an emphasis with recovering the remains, as opposed to just studying them back in the lab. You can learn a whole lot more by studying where the remains were recovered, how they were laid out, and the condition they were in.
Anywho, that was my main source of depression this week. The only redeeming thing that saved me was that I got the game Oblivion for Xbox 360.I've been playing the heck out of it and don't regret it because it’s really fun and really pretty. I still attend practices with my clan, and that's pretty much it. The rest of my time is spent on the 360.It looks like I’m going to be really busy after this week until I graduate. I have a ton of important projects and papers due for class. Thank goodness for video games to help relieve the stress.
So you're probably wondering what I'm going to do now that I can't get into grad school eh? Well, I have a few plans in mind. I plan to go and do forensic research with the University of Nebraska Med School, and while doing that take more classes at UNO for next year. This summer I have a few options open to do field research or take some more classes. I'm just still deciding on what to do. I better get on it soon though...damn procrastination...
